Top Ten Internet TIPS

1. Domain

A domain is the name and type of site you use. For example: lmcint.com Is a commercial domain, with lmcint representing our name (LMC International). Another example of a domain is royalbank.com. Other common domains are:

***.com commercial, for profit organizations.
***.edu educational institutions
***.gov government
***.int international organizations (i.e. NATO)
***.mil U.S. military sites
***.org other organizations (i.e. non-profit organizations)
***.ca Canada
***.on.ca Ontario, Canada

There are many others and you will become familiar with them as you continue to surf the Internet.

2. Search Engine

A tool that allows you to search the Internet for specific topics of interest. They contain references to common subject areas that you can point-and-click to connect to other links, that connect to other links, and so on. Some of the more popular search engines are "Web Crawler", "Yahoo", and "Alta Vista".

3. % of hits in searches

Most search engines (i.e. Yahoo, Alta Vista, Web Crawler) provide you with a percentage of relevance to your search. i.e. if you are searching for a list of HR Associations, Yahoo may show a 78% relevance on one site and a 45% relevance on another site listed.

4. Back/Forward

As you maneuver around the Internet you can go back to the previous screen by clicking once on the Back button at the top left hand corner of the program. You can also go forward by clicking on the Forward button (next to the Back button).

5. Hyperlinks

Text which is often seen in blue and underlined, that jumps you to a different site on the WWW when you click on it. Also referred to as Typertext or Links. Note: the color of the text will change once you have visited that site.

6. Bookmark

Also referred to as "Hot List" or "Favourites". Storing a site you visit to a list, allowing you to then revisit that site quickly (avoiding re-typing the address). When you reach a site you know you want to revisit, click on Bookmark (or Favourites), then click on Add. When you want to see that site again, click on the word Bookmark/Favourites in the menu bar at the top of your screen, then select the site from the list.

7. URL

Also referred to as a Uniform Resource Locator. Quite simply, it is an address. An example is http://www.lmcint.com (LMC International Inc.'s homepage).

8. Graphics

Some sites give you the option to view the site as Text Only. If you find it takes too long for images/home pages to come up on your screen, you can turn off the graphics by clicking on Text Only. This will make your browsing faster, but not as pretty.

9. Reload

If you find it takes too long to get into a site, you can stop transmission by clicking on the Stop button at the top. Then click on Reload to try getting into that site again. Sometimes transmission can be hindered by a problem with the telephone lines.

10. Boolean logic

A system used for searching information on the Internet using and combining terms or symbols such as AND, OR, NOT, +, and -.

i.e. If you are searching for HR Associations you can type in "HR +Associations" (without the quotes). Note: there is no space between the + sign and the word Associations. If you are interested in only Canadian HR Associations you can type "HR +Associations +Canadian". Again, this is typed without the quotes.
