Follow these steps to properly prepare to write your cover letters.

  • Carefully examine the information you have about the position and decide whether you are qualified.

  • Take a clean white piece of paper. Draw a line down the middle. Head the left-hand side "Requirements/Key Dimensions" and head the right hand side "My Qualifications."

  • If you have written information about the position (a job ad, for example), underline or highlight the important ideas outlined in it such as facts about the company and qualifications/experience that they are seeking.

  • On the "Requirements" side of the page, jot down all the words that you have underlined in a list with lots of spaces in between. If you do not have a job ad or information about the position in writing, think about the possible key requirements of the position and list them on the worksheet.

  • Identify specific examples of skills or work experience that relate to each requirement and jot them down in the qualification side of the worksheet.

  • Now write your letter relating your qualifications directly and specifically to the requirements/needs of the position.
